Bobby Mathews completed the game without help from the bullpen as the
Providence Grays won at Messer St. Grounds in dramatic fashion over the
Buffalo Bisons, the final score, 8 to 7.
Providence won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After an
out was recorded, Joe Start tripled. One out later, Emil Gross stepped in
and he was walked intentionally. Monte Ward then ripped a base-hit resulting
in a mighty exciting win for Providence and the 47,883 home town fans in
attendance. Providence rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.
Mathews(12-6) allowed 7 runs on the game. Pud Galvin(42-17) suffered the loss.
He allowed 11 hits and 1 walk in 8 and 2/3 innings.
