Berra propelled Pittsburgh to victory. He lost the ball over the fence for three runs in the 5th inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 7th inning and laced a one-base hit bringing in a run in the 9th inning. Boston was not lacking for run support as they scored in 6 separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is also needed to win ballgames. Billy Pierce(1-1) went 5 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Pierce was helped out by Vic Lombardi who recorded his 17th save. Ralph Branca(15-10) was hit with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 6 innings. 'I struggled a bit out there today,' Pierce said, 'but I toughed it out and we got the win.'
