Red Smith had 3 base hits and 4 RBI as the Detroit Tigers defeated the awful
Washington Nationals by the score of 11 to 5 at Navin Field.

Smith had a big day at the plate.  He lined a single knocking in a run in the
1st inning, tripled which was good for two runs in the 4th inning and ripped
a base-hit which plated a run in the 5th inning.  Detroit had 16 hits
overall, while Washington had 9.  

The winning pitcher was Dutch Leonard(8-18) who allowed 5 runs in 8 innings.
The losing pitcher was Jimmy Lavender(2-5).  He got hammered, allowing 10
hits and 5 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
