Carl Erskine pitched a 3 hit shutout as the New York-AL Yankees topped the
Cleveland Indians by a score of 1 to 0 at Cleveland Stadium.
Erskine(13-15) looked very much in control throughout the night. He didn't
allow much, just 3 hits and 6 walks in 9 innings. Cleveland made it exciting
in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The loss was charged to Alex Kellner(3-10). Mel Gross was subdued after the
ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more
fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That is what really ticks
me off!'
