The potent Cleveland Indians put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 5th inning
and defeated the lifeless New York-AL Yankees by a score of 13 to 9 at Yankee
Stadium.
Cleveland took the lead for keeps in the 3rd inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 3
base hits. Gil Hodges got things going when he slapped a single. Sam Mele
came next and he smacked a single. Johnny Pesky then would hit into a
fielders choice resulting in a run. Eddie Joost came up and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Murry Dickson came up to bat and banged out a single driving
home another two teammates. Cleveland dominated offensively as they scored
in 6 different innings.
The victory went to Dickson(15-7) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing 5 runs.
Mel Parnell(11-8) was charged with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 5 walks
in 4 and 1/3 innings.
Sid Gordon smashed 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI but his offense was not enough to
carry New York-AL to victory.
