Sam Mele blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI as the Washington Nationals defeated
the Boston-AL Red Sox in 11 innings by the score of 3 to 2 at Fenway
Park.

The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Washington won the game in the
11th inning. After an out was recorded, Mele doubled. Pete Castiglione
followed and he ripped a one-base hit. Joe Presko then let a pitch get away
from him scoring the run. Both teams finished the game with 9 hits.

The victory went to Ralph Branca(7-12) who went 10 innings, allowing 2 runs.
Branca got relief help from Walt Masterson who gained credit for his 5th
save. Presko(6-4) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and no
walks in 2 innings.

'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Branca said,
'this was one of those times.'
