Jim Devlin completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Louisville
Grays defeated the ice-cold New York Mutuals by a score of 4 to 3 at Union
Grounds.
Louisville started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of
the first plating 2 runs using 2 hits. After two were out Devlin got things
rolling when he doubled. Bill Hague came to the plate and doubled scoring a
single run. Jim Clinton then reached on an error scoring the final run of
the inning. New York threatened in the 9th but Louisville was able to put
down the rally.
The winning pitcher was Devlin(34-25) who allowed 3 runs for the game. The
loss was charged to Bobby Mathews(19-33). He was stingy with the
baserunners, allowing just 7 hits and no walks in 9 innings.
'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Bill Cammeyer after the game.
'We lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions every
Little Leaguer hears every day.'
