Third baseman Eddie Mathews blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI at Griffith
Stadium as the Chicago-NL Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 4 to
3.

Washington surrendered all of the runs Chicago-NL needed in the 4th inning
when they scored 4 runs on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Mathews who
disappointed the partisan crowd when he smacked a three-run homer.
Washington had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Whitey Ford(12-7) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Ford got help
from Bob Greenwood who was credited with his 1st save. Don Newcombe(6-3)
ended up with the loss.

'This was a tough loss,' said Gordy Renaud, 'the kind that sticks with you for
awhile.'
