Mickey Welch was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the New York Gothams defeated the dreadful Detroit
Wolverines in 10 innings by a score of 5 to 4 at Polo Grounds.
The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. New York was victorious in the
10th inning. Ed Caskin delivered a one-base hit. Welch stepped up next and
he drew a walk. Buck Ewing then lined a base-hit to load the bases. Monte
Ward followed and he stroked a one-base hit making New York the winners and
sending the 949 fans home happy. New York finished with 17 hits in the
victory.
Welch(26-23) was the winner allowing 4 runs for the game. Frank Meinke(6-19)
was charged with the loss. He was unable to control the New York offense and
allowed 17 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.
