1,537 fans watched an exciting game at Washington Park. The Pittsburg Pirates
topped the Brooklyn Superbas by the slimmest of margins, 9 to 8.

The deciding run was scored by Pittsburg in the 9th. Bones Ely slapped a
one-base hit. Two outs later A balk was came up and he called. Ginger
Beaumont then doubled scoring the run. Although they lost, Brooklyn did
out-hit Pittsburg 13 to 9.

The win went to Tully Sparks(9-7) who allowed 8 runs in 8 innings. Sparks got
relief help from Jim Gardner who gained credit for his 3rd save. Bill
Hill(7-10) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 9 hits and 8 walks in 9
innings.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Patsy Donovan said after the game. 'Sparks did not have command
of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'
