WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Bill Joyce robbed Lave Cross of a base hit.

Third baseman Bill Joyce had 4 hits and 6 RBI as the Washington Senators
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 16 to 13 at Baker Bowl.

Joyce was a source of great heartache for the Philadelphia faithful all day.
He just kept pounding out hits! He slapped a base-hit in the 1st inning,
ripped a solo home run in the 5th inning, doubled with all three runners
coming home in the 7th inning and lined a single bringing in two baserunners
in the 9th inning. Washington provided plenty of action in the 7th inning
which saw them plate 6 runs on 6 hits. It was roller coaster of a game as
the lead change hands 6 times.

Jake Boyd(5-7) was the winner allowing 11 runs in 8 innings. Boyd was helped
out by John Malarkey who recorded his 1st save. Con Lucid(18-8) was charged
with the loss. He got hammered, allowing 16 hits and 8 walks in 9 innings.

Washington now has a record of 38-76. Philadelphia, which had been on a roll,
saw their record drop to 74-46.
