Elmer Steele hurled a 8 hitter as the Boston Red Sox defeated the awful New
York Highlanders in 14 innings by a score of 2 to 1 at Huntington Ave
Grnds.
The score was tied at 1 after nine. Finally, Boston pulled the game out in
the 14th inning. Tris Speaker laced a base-hit. Doc Gessler came to the
plate and laced a one-base hit. Gessler took second on the throw. Jake
Stahl then would hit into a fielders choice resulting in an exciting win for
Boston and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. The teams
had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
The victory went to Steele(5-4) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Joe
Lake(2-20) was the loser. He surrendered only 2 runs and 10 hits in 13
innings.
