Walter Johnson carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Griffith Stadium as
the Washington Nationals beat the Boston Red Sox in 15 innings 1 to
0.
Neither team scored in the first nine innings. Washington won the hard fought
contest in the 15th inning. After an out was recorded, Ray Morgan slapped a
single. One out later, George McBride stepped up to the plate and he doubled
resulting in a mighty exciting win for Washington and the 3,372 home town
fans in attendance. Washington had a total of 8 hits for the game.
It was the 6th shutout of the year for Johnson(22-11). The right-handed
Johnson lost his chance for a no-hitter when Dick Hoblitzell singled with one
out in the 6th inning. Hugh Bedient(9-8) took the loss in relief. He
surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Johnson - except Boston. Bill
Carrigan lamented, 'He just was 'on' this afternoon. He was keeping our guys
off balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a
fun game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'
