Center fielder Tommy Leach smacked 2 triples and had 2 RBI as the very strong
Detroit Tigers topped the Washington Nationals in 10 innings by a score of 3
to 2 at Bennett Park.
The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Finally, Detroit pulled
the game out in the 10th inning. Fielder Jones kicked off the action when he
drew a walk. Hooks Wiltse then fired a sharp breaking ball that appeared to
cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and was ruled a passed
ball. Frank Chance then reached on an error. After an out was recorded,
Leach came to bat and tripled plating a run. George Stone came to the plate
and smacked a single giving Detroit the victory as 5,166 happy fans
celebrated wildly. Both teams finished the game with 8 hits.
Ed Karger(21-13) went 1 inning allowing 1 run for the victory. Wiltse(2-4)
took the loss. He pitched 9 and 1/3 innings allowing 8 hits and 2 walks.
