Pittsburgh was unable to claim the lead after Chicago-NL went ahead in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring one runner. Pittsburgh tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. Al Widmar(9-9) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Widmar got relief help from Howie Judson who gained credit for his 14th save. Eddie Lopat(8-13) was the loser. Andy Spector was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
