Dupee Shaw reeled off a total of 14 strikeouts and John Irwin hit 2 doubles as
the Boston Reds outscored the slumping Cincinnati Outlaw Reds in 12 innings 9
to 8.
Both teams had scored 8 runs after nine full innings. Boston won it in the
12th inning. Ed Crane reached on an error. Crane got a good lead and stole
second. After an out was recorded, Jim McCormick then fired a sharp breaking
ball that appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by him and
was ruled a passed ball giving Boston the win as 711 happy fans joyfully
celebrated. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans,
as the lead kept changing - 7 times in all.
The win went to Shaw(16-6) who allowed 8 runs in the game. McCormick(10-5) was
the loser. He allowed 14 hits and 2 walks in 11 and 1/3 innings.
Dan O'Leary was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you
see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling
the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
