Christy Mathewson reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts as the New York Giants
pulled out a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 1 to 0 at Polo
Grounds.
The game was decided in the 9th inning. After two outs Fred Snodgrass
delivered a one-base hit. Red Murray stepped up next and he smacked a
single. Al Bridwell then drew a walk to load the bases. Art Devlin stepped
in and he lined a base-hit giving New York the victory and sending the 15,088
home-town fans home happy. New York rapped out 8 hits for the afternoon.
For Mathewson(22-9) it was his 5th shutout this year. Lefty Leifield(13-10)
was charged with the loss. He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 8
hits and 3 walks.
Pittsburgh's manager was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but
did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start
calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
