In a startling finish the New York-AL Yankees staged a comeback then held on to win over the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 4 to 3 at Crosley Field. New York-AL came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs using 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Willard Marshall initiated the scoring spurt when he laced a base-hit. Billy Cox came next and he slapped a single, and an error was also committed. Granny Hamner then would ground out bringing in a run. Mickey Mantle followed and he doubled plating another run. Billy Goodman came up to bat and banged out a single scoring the final run of the inning. New York-AL had 9 hits overall, while Cincinnati had 6. Satchel Paige(12-5) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Paige got relief help from Carl Erskine who gained credit for his 4th save. Stu Miller(5-4) took the loss in relief. After the game, it took a long while before Rob Hickok emerged from his office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted over in the New York-AL locker room.'
