Pittsburgh started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the first scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. After two outs Walker Cooper started the rally when he doubled. Willie Mays came next and he cleared the fences for a two-run home run. That early scoring was all that Wynn(25-3) needed. Wynn got relief help from Ellis Kinder who was excellent in relief and gained credit for his 6th save. Warren Spahn(5-10) took the loss. He got hammered, allowing 11 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings. The Pittsburgh ballclub's record now stands at a league leading 85-53. Not able to get much going in recent weeks, Washington is 2-8 of late and now has an overall record of 47-91, worst in the league.
