Bones Ely had 3 base hits and Deacon Phillippe tossed a complete game at
Exposition Park as the dominant Pittsburg Pirates beat the St. Louis
Cardinals by the count of 9 to 8.

Pittsburg scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 8th inning plating 2
runs on 4 hits.  After two outs Fred Clarke began the rally when he smacked a
single.  Ely followed next and he banged out a single.  Phillippe then
delivered a base-hit resulting in a run.  Tom McCreery followed and he
slapped a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning.  Despite scoring
in 5 separate innings, St. Louis could not get the win.  

The win went to Phillippe(18-8) who allowed 8 runs in the game. Cy
Young(10-24) took the loss.  Pittsburg scored big getting 9 runs off him in 8
innings.  

The Pittsburg ballclub's record now stands at a league leading 76-47.  With
the loss St. Louis now has a record of 56-65.
