WEB GEMS- Top 6th: Hugh Duffy robbed Aleck Smith of an extra base hit.

In a great finish the Brooklyn Bridegrooms came back in the top of the ninth
and held on to win over the Boston Beaneaters by a score of 12 to 11 at South
End Grounds.

Brooklyn scored the winning runs in the top of the 9th inning when they came
up with 4 runs on 4 hits. The highlight belonged to Fielder Jones who
silenced the crowd when he laced a one-base hit bringing home two
baserunners. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 6 times.

The win went to Harley Payne(16-16) who allowed 9 runs in 8 innings. Chauncey
Fisher earned his 5th save. Jack Stivetts(10-5) was the losing pitcher. He
was unable to control the Brooklyn offense and allowed 18 hits and 3 walks in
9 innings.

After the game, it took a long while before Frank Selee emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this
afternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a
lot more light-hearted over in the Brooklyn locker room.'
