Christy Mathewson went the distance as the New York Giants defeated the
Chicago Cubs in 11 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at Polo Grounds.
The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Finally, New York
prevailed in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Josh Devore reached
on an error. Larry Doyle followed and he reached on an error. Fred
Snodgrass struck out, unable to help the rally. Red Murray stepped in and he
was walked intentionally to load the bases. Al Bridwell came to the plate
and drew a walk giving New York the win and sending the home town fans into a
frenzy. New York had 10 hits for the afternoon.
Mathewson(24-9) finished the game allowing 4 runs in the victory. The losing
pitcher was Orlie Weaver(0-2) in relief. He allowed 1 run and no hits in 2/3
of an inning.
