In a close game it was the Chicago White Stockings 5, the Providence Grays 3
at Lake Front Park.

John Clarkson(5-3) delivered a fine performance for Chicago.  He allowed 8
hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings and served up 2 'big flies'.
Providence had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.  

Clarkson got help from Ned Williamson who was credited with his 1st save.  The
losing pitcher was Old Hoss Radbourn(45-22).  He pitched 8 innings giving up
7 hits and 2 walks.
