Doc Ayers dominated striking out 17 Philadelphia batters as the Washington
Nationals defeated the Philadelphia Athletics by the score of 8 to 3 at
National Park.

Ayers(1-1) had a strong outing. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 7
hits and 3 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. Washington ended up with 11 hits for
the game while Philadelphia had 7.

Charlie Boardman(0-2) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners
giving up 8 hits and 6 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. The Washington fans were
thrilled by the performance put forth by Ayers, but it was clearly his
strikeouts that they enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans
showed him their appreciation with a loud cheer.' Clark Griffith said
following the game.
