Bobby Mathews pitched a complete game at Jefferson St Grounds as the
Philadelphia Athletics pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Pittsburgh
Alleghenys by the count of 3 to 2.

Philadelphia erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning scoring 2 runs on 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Jocko
Milligan got things going when he lashed a single. Fred Corey came next and
he reached on an error. John Coleman then stroked a single plating a run.
Cub Stricker was up next and he worked the squeeze play to perfection giving
Philadelphia the victory as 1,775 happy fans celebrated wildly. Pittsburgh
out-hit Philadelphia 8 to 5, but Philadelphia ended up with more runs.

Mathews(31-18) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. Pete
Meegan(7-8) suffered the loss. Mathews and Orator Shafer were really
whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As
Harry Stovey noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's
attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys
- it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
