Gene Wright blanked New York allowing just 2 hits at Washington Park as the
Brooklyn Superbas beat the floundering New York Giants in 11 innings 1 to
0.
Neither team scored in the first nine innings. Brooklyn ended up winning it
in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Bill Dahlen drew a walk.
Dahlen got a good lead and stole second. One out later, Christy Mathewson
then threw a high and inside pitch that got by the catcher; it was ruled a
passed ball making Brooklyn the victor and beginning a joyous home town
celebration. Brooklyn finished with just 6 hits in the victory.
Wright(1-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year.
Mathewson(25-11) was hit with the loss. He was a hard-luck loser as he did
not allow an earned run in his 10 and 2/3 innings of work.
George Davis was obviously impressed with the pitching of Wright, 'That guy
made us look a little silly out there this afternoon. We just couldn't get
to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got that
kinda performance out of his system.'
