Al Spalding pitched a complete game at South End Grounds as the Troy Haymakers
lost a heartbreaker to Boston Red Stockings by the score of 4 to 3.

The game was won by Boston with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After
an out was recorded, Charlie Gould reached on an error. John McMullin then
uncorked a pitch that was ruled a passed ball. McMullin then fired a sharp
breaking ball that appeared to cross-up the catcher. In any event, it got by
him and was ruled a passed ball making Boston victorious to the delight of
the the home town crowd. Although they lost, Troy did out-hit Boston 11 to
6.

The winning pitcher was Spalding(21-9) who allowed 3 runs for the game.
McMullin(13-12) was the loser. He was pinned with the loss despite not
allowing an earned run in his 8 and 1/3 innings of work.
